William Ames

William Ames

b.1576; d. 1633

William Ames was born in 1576 in Ipswich, England. He died Nov. 14, 1633, in Rotterdam. William Ames was an English Puritan theologian remembered for his writings on ethics and for debating and writing in favour of strict Calvinism. The Calvinists emphasized that salvation is limited to those who are foreordained by God to receive it and are not capable of falling out of his grace.  William Ames was brought up by a maternal uncle, Robert Snelling of Boxford. He was educated at the local grammar school and from 1594 at Christ's College, Cambridge.He was considerably influenced by his tutor at Christ's, William Perkins, and by his successor Paul Bayne. Ames graduated BA in 1598 and MA in 1601, and was chosen for a fellowship in Christ's College.
